Something Like Praise
Praise be to Neruda and his poems
that tell the beginning, the thousand
ways to say I love you. Praise be
to Plath, the need for fuck you, eat shit
and die you heartless bastard,
her poems the poems I needed when
the man I thought I loved–the one
I gave Neruda to–up and quit
on me. Andy said the heart’s
a violent muscle, opening and closing
and praise him for that, but mostly,
praise be to my mother, whom I call
drunk one night and cry to from a time
zone away. When I tell her that I will never
love again, she sighs, says life is queer,
isn’t it? And I expect her to hang up,
to say call me when you are sober,
but she crades the phone in the nape
of her neck as I cradle the phone
in the nape of mine, whispers a story
of when she almost left my father,
but didn’t, the story I will retell
myself years later, when, broken,
I praise our ability to move forward.
