The Last Stretch

The westbound bus is ailing:
lights, air conditioner turned off
to spare the battery.
Ceiling vents open to the sweet
late-summer dusk.

Outside, in a field, a pond
reflects the last of the light.
Clumps of willow dissolve
in a wash of shadow darker
than sky, a black cloth
flung over the world like
the cover of a birdcage.

Passengers’ talk fades to a murmur;
the children retreat under headphones.
You hold my hand.

It’s the end of the day. Don’t worry
if there’s nothing left to say.
