A Kind of Family Reunion
Lately, almost every day, I have found myself
for several moments back in one of the rooms I grew up in
with my immediate family there, looking quite alive,
occupied with tasks or recreations:
petting the dog, or changing the newspaper
at the bottom of the canary’s cage.
My visits are not long enough to allow them
to leave the rooms they occupy. Silently
they do what I watch them do.
They cannot see me or each other.
I feel sure they would not hear me if I spoke.
