Editor’s Prize co-winners: Gibson, Williams

We’re very proud to announce that the co-winners of the 2012 Editor’s Prize are RJ Gibson, for his manuscript You Could Learn a Lot, and Lois Williams, for her manuscript Night Air. Both chapbooks will be published this winter. Please stay tuned for more details about both titles, and please join us in congratulating both poets!

RJ Gibson holds an MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson College’s Program for Writers.  His chapbook, Scavenge, was a co-winner of the 2009 Robin Becker Chapbook Prize.  His poems, essays, and interviews have appeared in Court Green, Columbia Poetry Review, Connotation Press: An Online Artifact, Lambda Literary Foundation.org, OCHO, and various other journals and anthologies.  In 2008, he was a Poetry Fellow at Lambda Literary Foundation’s New and Emerging Writer’s Retreat.  Currently, he is a Lecturer at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Lois Williams was raised in Britain along the North Norfolk coast and now lives in Pittsburgh.  She teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and writes about family, landscape, and various kinds of migration.  She is at work on a nonfiction book about the invention of home.  Her recent poems and essays can be found in Cave Wall, Fourth River, Granta, and New England Review.

Scavenge hits third printing

Please join us in congratulating RJ Gibson, whose chapbook, Scavenge, is now in its third printing! Co-winner of the 2009 Robin Becker Prize, this title is one of our best sellers and absolutely deserves its ever-widening readership. We can’t wait till RJ has a full-length book, but till then, we wholeheartedly recommend this collection: 24 pages of smart, sharply observant poems whose titles alone–from “Coming from a Farm” and “Earthly Delights” to “Erotics” to “Ontology: Britney Spears”–let you know you’re in for an original treat. Congrats, RJ!

Thanks again to all the good folks at this year’s Small Press Festival in Pittsburgh, who made our first public foray into the Small Press Wonder Tent so effortless and enjoyable. I bopped down to Carlisle to pick up Kari Larsen and we zipped over to Pittsburgh via the the tollway through the first blush of early-autumn foliage. It was great to browse and chat with the other vendors/writers/artists and to get such a positive response to our catalog. The overwhelming “I-must-pick-this-up-and-check-it-out” title was Terry Kirts’ To the Refrigerator Gods. We set up next to David McNamara’s fabulous sunnyoutside table and enjoyed two days of friendly, engaging, and helpful bookchat (as well as a bit of Red Sox/DamnYankees banter). I met Noel Sloboda, whose poems I first encountered back when I was on staff at West Branch; had a lovely meeting & chat with Karen Weyant  & her partner; finally met the awesome RJ Gibson; and got to hang out & have breakfast with the delightful Jeff Oaks. So many beautiful books–I wanted one of each! Already looking forward to doing this again next year.
